After purchasing the Oscar Schmidt OM10E A-Style which I'm very happy with I thought that based on the company and the positive reviews that the OM 40 would make a great second instrument. While a rank beginner on the Mandolin I played both the fiddle and bass for over a decade so have somewhat of an ear. I was sorely disappointed in this product. From the cheap polymer tuning pegs and the tarnished brass tailpiece to the blotchy edged pick guard the overall appearance and finish were poor. But I was ready to work past that if the sound was good. Perhaps because I'm not interested in Bluegrass this model came off sounding very twangy and sharp. While the strings were easier to manipulate it came at the cost of dead sounds in the major chords and all sorts of strings striking the frets with that annoying tinny sound. Overall the sound is harsh compared to my A Style OM10E and is generally unpleasant. As a noob I'm really not up for re-stringing and bridge set up just to get the sound of my original mando's sound. So it's headed back to the barn and I'll stick with my original OM10E until at some point a year or two down the road I've acquired the skills that justify a new instrument.

The OM40 has the finish of a much more expensive instrument. It is an excellent beginner mandolin, if you don't want to spend a lot of money. I set mine up myself with no problems .I find it to be very easy on the fingers, and has an excellent sound .I would have given it 5 stars If it came with better strings. I broke a string the first time I tried to tune it. after putting on a new set of martin bluegrass strings, it is becoming my favorite. I recommend it for beginners and experienced players as well.

This was a gift to replace a similar instrument. We weren't sure if it would have the same quality sound as the other damaged one. Wow we're we surprised ! The is a great value for the money and it plays beautifully and the suggested case fit like a glove. Thanks for this buying experience. We are new to online buying and hesitant, but Amazon has exceeded our expectations.

I have read reviews and was warned about some of the less expensive mandolins being hard on fingers. I play violin and guitar, so I understand this concern. The pegs made me a little nervous with their resistance in tuning. However, the more I moved them around the better they were to work with. After the tuning was done I found the strings to be easy to handle and a great tone come from the instrument.I may have been disappointed in this mandolin if I had paid full retail price. However, at Amazon price, it seemed like a fair deal for what I received and needed.Once again, Amazon rocks!

This was listed as a left handed mandolin. I bought it for this reason. After receiving it, I was called away due to a family emergency, and the return date occured while I was at a family funeral. Missing the return was not the company or Amazon's fault, but when you get an instrument that isn't set up, I think you could extend the reurn time. Especially if it is not what you ordered. All in all it's a nice RIGHT handed mando, made by Washburn. Sound is not the best, but it just needs alot of playing to sweeten up.

Received the Oscar Schmidt Mandolin and very happy with it. Easy to set up and excellent sound. Great looking instrument as well. I recommend the Oscar Schmidt to musicians of all abilities. The price buying through Amazon was unmatched. Received the product in 2 days as promised.
