The Focal Aria Evo X No. 4 Floorstanding Loudspeakers are certainly a notable upgrade for any serious music listener, proving that some things just sound better. These speakers deliver where it truly counts for an audiophile. My journey to these Focals was quite deliberate. After years with my beloved Bordeaux speakers by Curt Campbell and Jim Holtz, it was time for an upgrade, particularly to speakers that could truly handle the ample power from my Purifi 1ET9040BA Monoblock Power Amplifiers driven by a NAD M66 preamplifier. I was on the hunt for floorstanding speakers that offered a neutral tonal balance and played exceptionally well with high-current, low-distortion amplifiers. After evaluating contenders like the Spendor A4 & A7, Revel PerformaBe F226Be & F228Be, ATC SCM40 (v2), and Focal Kanta N°3, the Aria Evo X No. 4 stood out. It offered the most significant low-end performance among the options, while also providing that warm yet detailed and dynamic sound that perfectly aligned with my music-focused setup. The synergy with my existing amplification was immediately apparent, creating a truly musical presentation. The absolute standout feature of the Focals is their warm yet detailed and dynamic sound signature. Music feels lively and engaging, with a great balance between warmth and clarity. It’s like a well-cooked meal: comforting but with all the distinct flavors shining through. The impressive dynamic range and the way the speakers handle complex musical passages are truly remarkable. Now, for a bit of constructive feedback, or as I like to call it, "reality checking": while excellent on their own, I found I needed to extend with a subwoofer to get the lower dynamics I truly wanted. My Arendal 1723 2S paired very well, completing the sonic picture. This decision was also carefully considered. I needed a subwoofer focused on tight, accurate bass for music, not just boomy home theater effects. After looking at options like the Perlisten R210s, KEF KC62, and SVS SB-3000, the Arendal, with its dual sealed 13.8" woofers and high-output Class D amplifier, offered the clean and powerful output, precision control, and user-friendly features I prioritized. It’s not a flaw of the Focals, more like finding the perfect dance partner to unlock the system's full potential. My primary reason for picking these audio companions was a quest for high-performance floorstanding speakers for my dedicated music listening system that could truly leverage the power I had on tap. And in that regard, they absolutely delivered.Would I recommend them? A resounding yes, with a chuckle. They are a fantastic choice for music enthusiasts who cherish a warm, dynamic sound, especially when integrated into a well-matched system like mine, with capable amplification and a dedicated, high-performance subwoofer. Think of it as building your dream sound system, one excellent component at a time, culminating in a truly immersive experience.
