We are from the south where we give directions by stating objects but moved up north where ever one uses N, S, E, W so we needed a real compass! My husband loves it!

The compass was gorgeous and the detail was intricate. However, prior to gifting it, I took it out of the plastic bag. There is a ‘lock’ and ‘unlock’ knob, when I opened it the glass popped out along with the compass needle and decor.I managed to get the insides back, but could not fix the knob, it remains broken.It is a sentimental piece and will be sitting on a shelf so I chose not bring it up to the seller.It fit my need

Right away, the “leather” case that the compass comes in is actually a very cheap, hard plastic-y case that has had a photo of leather grain printed on to it, photos attached. Once you open the leather case, there is a small piece of styrofoam that gets white foam flakes everywhere, on top of possibly the lowest quality “compass” I’ve ever seen.When I pulled the compass out of the case, the chain attached to it felt cheap and weak, not a big problem because I could have bought a nicer chain or leather band to clip on instead of the cheap, dingy one on it. The compass itself felt nice and heavy though, and the engraving is clear and easy to read (and no typos!). It has the “antique” kind of look and feel to it from the outside, and a big switch/lever thing for LOCK and UNLOCK.When I opened the compass lid to see the face of the compass, the needle was literally not even attached to anything at all, and it doesn’t look like it ever was. The photo I took of the face was right after looking at it for the first time, and you can see it’s literally just rolling around loose in there. It’s also RIDICULOUSLY cheaply-made materials, so I doubt this compass would ever function even a tiny bit even if the needle had been attached. The weird green jewel in the center of the face looks like it came from a Lisa Frank bedazzling kit, and the “glass” face is definitely just a thick piece of clear, cheap plastic (and looks and feels like it too).This was meant to be a gift, but I’m returning it because it not only wasn’t built right (needle not even attached to anything), but because the quality is so incredibly poor and the materials so ridiculously cheap/low quality. Even if I got a new one, I don’t want to give a gift that is less “here is a keepsake item for you” and more “here’s some gum ball machine garbage that is useless, cheap AND broken.” I would not recommend this to anyone, and won’t be buying from this seller again.
