The 42º is perfect for lower chip/pitch shots and can replace a PW distance on full shots. The “all-around” 49º is designed for medium height pitches, long bunker shots, mid range wedge shots, and can replace a gap wedge on full shots. The 56º is a bunker specific design with a wide forgiving sole to improve bunker shot consistency for mid-high handicap players.

As reference, I'm a 20-handicap, 53 years old...The Cleveland Niblick is so easy to use it's almost like cheating. It's the only club in my bag with which I can dial in a distance consistently, using full, 3/4 and half swings. This review is for the 49 degree, but I also have the 42 and 56 degree versions. You can really feel the club head when you swing, which has become very important to me, so much so that I'm now on the lookout for irons that feel the same way. I can fade, draw, hit high or low with this club all the time.The 49 degree niblick (which falls between your newer-model pitching wedge and your sand wedge, something like a gap wedge) can handle anything from 100-110 yards in with ease: shots from short fairway bunkers, from the rough, and of course from the fairway, where a nice half-swing will give me about 50 yards with a bit of roll (great for safe shots to the back of the green), and 3/4 works for about 75-80 yards. Around the greens, it's very useful for chipping and pitching onto large greens, where you'll get about as much carry as roll, give or take a few yards and depending on your pitching/chipping technique. 9 times out of 10, I'll use a Niblick to get up and down around the green.The "II" on this club is the newer model with the new USGA-conforming grooves. I bought this in order to compare the performance with my older 42 and 56 models. To be honest, I don't really notice a marked difference in how they stop on a green. I'm sure I'm not good enough to be affected by the difference. The newer model is probably less exotic to look at, which is fine, because the older model could make you feel self-conscious about using such an unorthodox club in your bag.By the way, it's no good in bunkers around the green, so if you go with the 56 model, be sure you also have a 58 o 60 degree traditional wedge with plenty of bounce for the sand.In closing, if I could have a complete set of irons like this niblick, I'd be the happiest golfer on the course!

I took out my 52 degree wedge, and this thing is not only easier to hit, it goes straight every time. Same exact distance as a 52 degree wedge, but it is much easier around the greens with bump and runs with much more control and consistency .... No fat shots and no thin shots while chipping. Just all around a good club. And for pitches up to 50-60 yards this little weapon is much easier to control that a half shot with a wedge. It's fun to hit shots with this thing, and I have a very low handicap, so do not think that this niblick is for hackers only.

I love this club. I use it for everything inside of 80 yards. The more you use it the better it gets.
